What Makes My Taste Buds Dance? My Top 5 Foods.

After writing about friendship in my last blog, a friend jokingly asked me to write about food next. To me, that was a good idea; then I concluded... why not write about my favorite meals? Personally, I love food (I mean, who doesn't?😜). If I'm asked what my favorite food or meal is, my usual reply would be "anything goes." I have dislikes, though.

So I thought, if I were given the opportunity to pick my top 5 foods, what would I pick? In this blog, I'll be sharing my top 5 picks.

(Apologies if you don't understand Yoruba; I'll try to provide English translations as much as possible.)

So here goes; let's take it in descending order:

5. Àmàlà + Draw Soups/ Àmàlà + Éfò Rírò (Vegetable Soup).

Yes! Like most Yoruba people, I love Amala with draw soups (okro soup, ogbono, specifically "ewédú"). There are different types: Cassava flour (Àmàlà láfún), Yam flour (Àmàlà isu), and Plantain flour (Àmàlà ògèdè). I can take either of the three separately, but I'm used to the three types being ground together. Like I said, Àmàlà with draw soups are top-notch🤤; I also love it with vegetable soup (a vegetable soup garnished with diced ponmo (what do you call this in English again?), cray fish, dried fish and the likes.

4. Moímoí (Beans Pudding).

I honestly don't know why I love this meal in particular. I love those ones made in leaves; the leaves give it an extra taste I like😋.

3. Sweet Potatoes.

I love this either boiled or fried. I take this either way, accompanied by fried eggs. Here are some of my weird potato combos:

✓ Boiled potatoes + fried eggs

✓ Fried potatoes + fried eggs + tea

✓ Fried potatoes + fried plantain + fried eggs

2. Àkàrà (Beans Cake) + Tom Brown.

Seeing beans cake might make you assume I like beans, but not really; I take cooked beans, though. I love beans with bread, or beans with corn; I'm fine with that. I love other meals derived from beans.

Now you're probably wondering.. What's Tom Brown? Tom Brown is a very... permit me to say... highly nutritious meal made up mostly of cereal and legumes.

Tip: It's a very good option for weaning a baby (instead of pap alone).

Here's what's in my Tom Brown:

✓ Wheat

✓ Yellow corn

✓ Millet

✓ Soyabean (optional)

✓ Groundnut (optional)

✓  Crayfish (optional)

All these grains ground together (dry) makes up my Tom Brown. I don't like excluding soybeans; it gives it an extra milky taste I love. I love Tom Brown because of its nutritious value. It's prepared the same way pap is prepared. You can add milk or sugar to give it an extra nice taste 😋.

And finally, the one I've been waiting to talk about...

1. Rice 😋.

Yes! Yes! I love rice. In different forms:

✓ Jollof rice

✓  Fried rice

✓ Rice + stew

✓ Rice + beans + stew

✓ Rice + vegetable soup

✓ Concoction Rice (Native jollof rice)

All with toppings like fried plantain, fish, meat, and the likes.

Other foods I love but don't know where to place them:

✓ Corn (either roasted or boiled; hard or soft - I'm good!)

✓ Fried plantain + fried eggs.

✓ Pounded yam.

There you have it; my Top 5. What's your own top 5? Tell me in the comment section.

Thanks!

  1. Having read this blog, I think I'll settle down to carefully identify my top five favourite foods because I'm not exactly the picky type but I do have my favourites.

Toni, this blog sold you out - you love food big time, but it's not a crime, lol.

Thanks for enlightening me about Tom Brown; I'm just getting to know of it for the first time. You crafted yet another interesting article. Brava!

  2. Probably because I am a lover of good food that was l love your blog. Though seeing people eating motivates me to eat too. So choosing my own top 5 food favorite is a challenge but I will participate. I will start in descending order too
    5) Bread with different combinations like fried eggs, boiled eggs, mayonnaise, butter, milk, yoghurt, vegetables salad, groundnuts, stew, vegetables (efo riro), tea, coffee, sardines, suya, chicken or turkey, chocolate etc. There is practically nothing that I didn't experiment bread with. Funny enough while growing up I don't like bread but Lagos made me love bread by force.
    4) Potatoes in any form be it pudding, fried, boiled, grilled and with anything from fried eggs, boiled eggs, different types of sauces.
    3) Rice I smiled while typing this because practically I love all forms of rice so let go to my second.
    2) Spaghetti, even in the absence of ingredients this food will still stands out. Be it jollof, fried, stir fry, plain or concoction. The. Only style I want to try is coconut spaghetti.
1)Last but the least is swallow (semovita) and Egusi soup garnished with vegetables.Even when I am sick the only food that goes through is Semo vita with Egusi.

    Fike well done 👍

  3. Thank you for writing.
I liked learning about Tom Brown as I never heard of it before now. It must be a nice meal, especially with Akara.

I have also not had the three kinds of flour mixed together. I've eaten Amala with two kinds of flour together, but I now wonder what it will feel like to have the three. Do I have favourite foods?

I'll just say that I like rice in different forms. And swallow in different forms too. I love love love vegetable soup too.
